I had always wanted a makeup vanity, like a little girl would have. Or like a Hollywood star would have.
Anytime I would see these massive bathrooms with his & hers sinks (well, we do have that) and his & hers closets and built-in vanity’s in the middle, I had stars in my eyes!!!!
Our bathroom wasn’t built like that, it’s alright, but not like a “dream master bath”.
All good, we’ll do the best we can with what we have!!
When we moved into this house, and for 7 years after, “my end of the closet” had built-in shelves. For years I could SEE a vanity there instead!

The way this all went down is we were redoing our kitchen counters at the time and looking for new barstools. I found the perfect ones, but they came in sets and we only needed 3. My husband asked “is there anything else you could use the 4th one for?”…
he he heeee…insert evil cat from Alice in Wonderland grin (I don’t remember his name. Chester?)
“As a matter of fact, yes I can!” I answered with complete confidence.
UH OH…I think he immediately ate his words by the look on my face, but then he asked what my idea was.
I told him how “we” could rip out those shelves and “we” could build a makeup vanity and use the 4th stool there!
Once I finally got my husband on board and reminded him “He CAN do ANYTHING!” I went straight to Pinterest for ideas and inspiration.
HOLY CRAP did I find these makeup vanity mirrors cost a small fortune!!!
Ya, we ain’t doing that! Some are hundreds or up to $1,000 for a mirror with lights! Super thankful to have a handy husband!
Thank you again to Pinterest for the DIY tutorials of how to make these mirrors yourself.
After a lot of online and in-store shopping (yes when we could still go to Home Goods, waahhh…we’re quarantined depending when you read this, it’s been almost 2 months and we’re all going a little crazy…hence why I am finally sitting down to write this post! Got nothin’ else to do!)…
- I found a desk with drawers that I liked for a great price and the size worked! (also available here)

- I found a mirror at HomeGoods.(You’ll want a mirror with a thick wood frame so you can drill holes into it, here are lots of options, just check size based on your desk and space.)
- I got these string lights at Target (cord color doesn’t matter since it will be behind the mirror).
And we (when I saw “we”, I mean my husband) MADE THIS HAPPEN!
I can’t get into the specifics of the measuring and drilling, that can be found on a different blog. I can help with the shopping, not the building!
But what I can tell you is you will mark out your holes ahead of time and here’s a tip: drill from the front of the mirror so that side stays smooth. You will unscrew the light bulbs from the string lights, line up the string to the holes from the back side and just screw the bulb back in from the front side to attach. Voilá!

If you have a DIY makeup vanity, I’d love to see it!
